What happens when the adults responsible for school safety are asked to regulate a situation, but haven't first regulated themselves?

In Episode 2 of the Beyond the Badge: Rethinking School Safety Through Social-Emotional Competence series, Dr. Lashawnte McCray-Sarvis flips the traditional conversation about social-emotional learning. Instead of focusing only on what students need, this episode examines the social-emotional competencies adults—particularly School Resource Officers, administrators, and educators—bring into high-pressure interactions with students.

Drawing from the foundation of her doctoral research on School Resource Officers trained in social-emotional competencies and school incidents of violence, Dr. McCray-Sarvis explores self-awareness, self-management, emotional regulation, empathy, social awareness, relationship skills, implicit assumptions, communication under pressure, and responsible decision-making.

Listeners will also be introduced to the P.A.U.S.E. Check, a practical strategy for responding more intentionally during emotionally charged situations:

P — Pause before reacting
A — Assess yourself
U — Understand the situation
S — Select your response
E — Engage with intention

This episode challenges school leaders and safety professionals to consider an important question: Are we training adults to manage student behavior without also training adults to manage themselves?

Because effective de-escalation isn't simply about controlling someone else's behavior.

De-escalation begins with the adult's ability to regulate themselves before attempting to regulate the situation.

Beyond the Badge is a five-part special series of The Road to an Effective Classroom Environment, exploring school safety through research, relationships, de-escalation, social-emotional competence, and practical leadership.

Connection Before Crisis.
