This is the road to an effective classroom environment with your host, Lashonta Sarvis.

Hello, everyone. I am your host, Lashonta, and I'm so happy that you were able to join me today. This is the first of many podcasts to come in which I will share strategies in ensuring an effective school climate and classroom environment. I am a mother, an educator, a motivator. I have been in the classroom as a social studies teacher. I've been an assistant principal, a principal, and I've also worked as a facilitator at the district office level. Twenty years of experience with many more to come.

And I wanted to be able to share strategies that educators can use in cultivating a positive school climate. I hope you will join me in this series as we travel down the road to an effective classroom environment. But before discussing some specific strategies, I want to share some of the prerequisites that I feel we as educators should have before we drive into our discussion. First, attitude. Having the right attitude before embarking on a career in education is very crucial. The right attitude encompasses empathy, kindness, compassion, and understanding.

Although these are not necessarily measurable, these have been proven to be needed in working with children. President Teddy Roosevelt was quoted as saying, people don't care how much you know until they know how much you care. Professional educator Rita Pearson, she personalized this quote and made it about children. Kids don't learn from people they don't like. From the superintendent to the substitutes in your building, the right attitude is not only required but necessary. Educators are entrusted with the well-being of children every day.

Educators can open minds as well as shut them down. A college student who declares education as a major must understand how he or she will impact the lives of thousands of children during the duration of his or her career. Impact that can and will have lasting effects. Education is not a career for the faint of heart. Children come to us with many issues that we cannot fix overnight, but we have to be able to reach them, teach them. We cannot expect children to know how to behave for us if we do not teach them first.

Passion is also an important precursor to implementing any strategies in the classroom. Passion for knowledge, passion for helping, passion for learning, and passion for change. The focus on the educator is a major component in addressing classroom environment. The teacher sets the tone on day one. Educators, they hear this at the beginning of every school year, and somehow, for some, the phrase becomes a distant memory by Christmas. Once attitude and passion are understood as they relate to the individual and how they relate to teaching and reaching children, most of the work in establishing an effective classroom environment has already begun.

Being an educator entails becoming a lifelong learner.
